This site explores probable paths to an 10 X Lifestyle, which is defined as "Ten times higher quality of life per unit of energy invested than the status quo." It's a fancy way of measuring more for less, and an intricate way of accounting for the feelings, sense of safety, self-esteem and belonging experienced by people on a daily basis.

The Human Brain is capable of remembering up to 150 people intimately and feeling comfortable. So we are working with models of 30-150 people. If this design inspires you to move closer to a 10 X lifestyle, write and tell us and know that that is a success. If you go deeper into the question: How can we design a culture from scratch that produces ten times more well-being per unit of energy consumed (time, money, wood, electricity, land etc.) this will lead to an exploration of the single most important question on the planet today: How can our quality of life improve while our rates of unsustainable consumption decrease?

The logic behind the need for a new form of shared living
Humans are going to Mars (link to this: The big question is what cultural templates will we use to form a relationship with a new host planet? It will initially be very expensive to bring even 100 people. The cost of crime, rape, murder, negligence, suicide and addiction could cost us the mission. These issues link deeply to our relationship with our bodies, our relationships with each other, and the relationship with our planet. We are going to need to test and use technologies for relationship mentally, emotionally and physically that are ten times better than average on earth.

At the same time as we prepare to populate Mars, we are on an exponential curve in the adoption of self-learning, self-replicating machines which will have a huge impact on the relationships on and with planet earth. What is needed more than anything else is an understanding of the programs that lead to well-being. It is difficult to know without making cultural programs explicit and examining their relative impact objectively, rather than blindly following the status quo.

As the earth moves towards an estimated population of ten billion people it is essential that we dramatically improve the efficiency with which we exchange value with the ecology we are a part of. Currently a typical American produces 100 tons of garbage, burns through 90,000 gallons of gas in the production and transportation of both individual and products consumed, and exports more than 1,500 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, while at the same time enduring an emotional state one could easily call mediocre. Mental/emotional disease is estimated at 20%, addiction at 14%, domestic violence within 30% of couples and self-loathing, loneliness and anxiety increasing.

A scientific study of ways to simultaneously reduce energy consumption by 70% and increase multidimensional levels of well-being by 1000% is one of the single most important human goals. Given the anthropological and social significance of 150 people ( the most intelligent approach seems to be to form groups of 150 people consciously with a 10 X objective and measure the energy consumed and value generated scientifically over time to develop and learn best-practices for sustainable well-being.
